Go4cork Plus by Amorim Underlay | Amorim
Go4cork Plus by Amorim underlay is produced using a mixture of cork with other by-products, based on the best principles of the circular economy.
The underlay makes a decisive contribution to the performance of the flooring solution. According to an analytic study conducted by the consultancy firm, EY, the underlay Plus Go4Cork by Amorim has a negative carbon balance of -8.1kg CO2 eq/m².
By promoting carbon sequestration in the cork oak forest that is superior to the CO2 emissions resulting from production, underlays are an excellent option for customers who seek to strike a balance between performance and environmental sustainability.
By including cork - a 100% natural, recyclable, and renewable raw material - in the composition, Amorim Cork Composites can reduce possible environmental impacts, especially when compared to underlays that use raw materials exclusively of a synthetic origin.
Furthermore, the combination of cork with surplus products from other industries ensures optimal performance of the flooring solutions in which it is incorporated. We thereby reinforce our commitment to a sustainable circular economy, which avoids waste.
The environmental footprint study of the underlay Go4cork Plus by Amorim was conducted by EY using a Life Cycle assessment methodology. In other words, it considered the sequestration of the cork oak forest, and adopted a cradle-to-gate approach, contemplating the environmental impacts of all activities, from extraction of the raw material, through production of all components, until departure from the factory gate. The methodology underpinning EY's studies was based on the ISO 14040/44 standards, complemented with the guidelines of the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD). Data associated with production were provided by Amorim Cork Composites, while the general production processes associated with the production of raw materials, energy, transport, and waste management were obtained from the ecoinvent 3.5 database.
The Characteristics
Go4cork Plus by Amorim underlay was developed respecting the nature and considering nature as the starting point for a sustainable future.
Respect for nature is the essence of our existence. By promoting cyclical extraction of cork, without damaging the cork oak trees, Corticeira Amorim's activity ensures the viability of the cork oak forest, which is a natural and renewable resource, that offers numerous environmental, economic and social benefits. Studies indicate that for each ton of cork produced, the cork oak forest can sequester up to 73 tons of CO2, and thus helps to reduce the Global Warming Potential. But Nature is just the starting point. Our mission involves trying to go further and applying the best sustainability principles.
Circular Economy
More than 50 years of circular economy principles. Striving continuously to reach zero waste and to optimize the added value of all raw materials
Underlay Go4Cork Plus has a negative carbon balance of – 8.1 kg/eqCO₂ per m²*, when taking into account the CO₂ sequestered by the cork oak forests and the emissions associated with the industrial process.
Up to 34 times less Greenhouse gas emissions than PU Foam (Polyurethane) solutions*
*These Amorim Cork Composites conclusions (outside the scope of the EY study) were based on the ecoinvent version 3.5 database (2018) but have not been verified by a third party.
Go4cork Plus by Amorim underlay also has the Ü mark certification (Z-158.10-239), which ensures that the product is in conformity in the context of national technical approvals in the German market. The European Construction Products Regulation (CPR) describes the fundamental requirements on hygiene, health, and environment protection. In Germany, these were specified, especially in terms of emissions behavior, as approval principles for health-evaluation of construction products by German Institute for Structural Engineering.
Corticeira Amorim continues to work on its Sustainable by nature program, which sets out its ambition for 2030. In 2018, 2019 and 2020 it established its ambition, principal areas of intervention and a plan for 2021-24. In 2021 it established the following quantitative goals by 2030:
