Calla | Hamelner Teppichwerke
With Calla quality, a carpet is produced and offered that consists of more than two-thirds recycled material. Its production is environmentally friendly, CO2 neutral, and uses green electricity from hydropower. Its long service life means that it only needs to be replaced after many years. In terms of noise reduction, slip resistance, and the binding of fine dust, it also offers users additional health benefits.
The ECONYL® yarn used for the coarse velour in a melange look, which is available in 11 colors, comes from regenerated nylon waste. This can be old fishing nets and industrial waste, which have been recycled by the company Aquafil and converted into the high-quality ECONYL® yarn. Other product components of the Calla, such as the backing or the adhesive for the backing, are also made from recycled material.
When the various product components are added together, the Calla quality has a recycled content of more than 68 percent. Part of this comes from the company's own recycling plant, where edge remnants and other carpet waste are reprocessed and returned to production as adhesive for fixing the backing.
The Characteristics
Calla consists of more than 2/3 recycled material. With the new Calla carpet quality, Hamelner Teppichwerke is presenting a carpet in its new Fascination #1 living collection that is impressive in terms of sustainability. The ECONYL® yarn used for the coarse velour in a melange look, which is available in 11 colours, comes from regenerated nylon waste. This can be old fishing nets and industrial waste, which have been recycled by the company Aquafil and converted into the high-quality ECONYL® yarn. When the various product components are added together, the Calla quality has a recycled content of more than 68 percent. Part of this comes from the company's own recycling plant, where edge remnants and other carpet waste are reprocessed and returned to production as adhesive for fixing the backing. Sustainable because it has a long shelf life. Calla also scores highly in terms of sustainability when it comes to the product life cycle. With more than 140 years of experience in the manufacture of carpets and rugs, the carpet factories know how to produce a carpet with a long service life. The Vorwerk brand, to which the Hamelin carpet factory belonged for a long time, is known for its high product quality. For a long time, the carpet factories advertised with the slogan 'Vorwerk carpet. It lasts longer than you would like.' This long durability means that customers can enjoy their carpets for a long time, so that they only need to be replaced very late.
Calla does something about noise indoors. Noise is one of the most annoying things these days. Noise from cars or construction work causes audible pollution that is transmitted through the air. Extreme noise levels impair the ability to concentrate and hinder normal activities; noise disturbs sleep and reduces vitality and the ability to concentrate. It causes stress and leads to nervous system disorders and impairs hearing. Calla significantly reduces the reverberation of sound because it absorbs over ten times more airborne sound than any other flooring material.
Calla does something about fine dust pollution indoors. Fine dust is a major problem for people who suffer from allergies. Pollutants such as allergens are bound to these particles and transported deep into the lungs. The average concentration of fine dust particles indoors was twice as high in rooms with hard floor coverings as in rooms with carpets. Calla binds these fine dust particles and releases fewer dust particles into the air than all other floor coverings. The particles are trapped there and can be easily removed from the carpet with a good hoover.
Calla does something to prevent slipping. There is a high risk of slipping or falling on smooth floor coverings. This also applies in particular to steps in private homes. Older people are more at risk of falling. When planning flats or rooms for senior citizens, it is therefore important to minimize the risk of slipping and falling as far as possible. Carpeting plays an important role here. The force of the impact caused by a fall depends on the thickness of the carpet construction. Calla reduces the impact of a fall by at least 7% and is therefore less likely to cause injuries.
As with the product components, Hamelner Teppichwerke also focuses on sustainability in the production of Calla. Back in the 1990s, the company, then still known as Vorwerk Teppichwerke, switched to environmentally friendly and resource-saving production processes.
The dyeing tower, built over several floors, deserves special mention here. The color is mixed at the top and then runs vertically downwards to the dyeing units. Using the force of gravity, the lines run empty on their own, minimizing the need to rinse the lines before mixing the next colors.
Today, the product is manufactured at the company site in Hamelin using green electricity and is CO2 neutral. Hamelner Teppichwerke uses green electricity generated by regional hydroelectric power stations.
