How was your first day at DOMOTEX 2019?
My first day of DOMOTEX began with much excitement and anticipation, particularly in Hall 9 where the various installations of the Framing Trends display showcase creative youthful talent. Whether it was the ephemeral ‘carpet’ being made in real time by artist Rena Detrixhe or the remarkable tapestry ‘Coral Garden’ by Vanessa Barragão – the youthful energy exhibited by these creators connects them both to the history of rugs as well as the future. Each piece challenging traditional forms for a new era.
Speaking of eras, I met with my dear friend and colleague Hadi Maktabi of Beirut whose eponymous gallery specializes in treasured antique woven works from the cradle of weaving. We discussed my work and love of new construction contrasted with his specialty of the historic and speculated as to where the industry is headed. We know not the answer but dialog such as this - that occurs at fairs such as DOMOTEX - is surely the way forward.
